Mithun Chakrabarti is well-known by everyone who takes interest in movies and even those who don’t. He has been an icon for decades, captivating audiences across the country with his dancing and acting abilities, says SETC, an acting institute in Kolkata.

The Struggling Days Of Mithun Chakrabarti

Mithun Chakraborty, born Gouranga Chakraborty, is a fighter who believes in pursuing his dreams. The actor’s rise to become one of Bollywood’s biggest stars was fraught with difficulties. In Bombay (Mumbai now), he had no godfather. He went there to try his luck and was in search of acting opportunities. During his early days of struggle, he had to sleep on water tanks on building terraces to avoid apprehending security guards as he had no place to stay.

In 1973, he graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune. Mrinal Sen offered him a role in ‘Mrigayaa’ (1976). Mithun plays Ghinua, a young tribal who strikes up a friendship with a British administrator in Bengal in the 1930s. His outstanding performance earned him the National Award.

In an interview, he stated that female actors refused to work with him because other male actors advised them not to. He spoke about having to overcome “a lot of obstacles” back in the day. He also stated that many times after visiting the sets, he discovered that directors substituted other well-known actors in his place for no apparent reason, even after everything was finalized.

Before his success in Bollywood, Mithun worked in Bengali commercial films that did well at the box office. Despite his talent, Mithun had to work very hard to get meaty roles in the Hindi film industry as filmmakers are said to reject him because of his skin tone. Mithun was adamant about succeeding, come hell or high water, says the best dance, modeling and acting institute in Kolkata.

Mithun Chakrabarti, The Icon

Mithun gradually began to work in low-budget films such as ‘Wardat’ and ‘Hum Paanch.’ Finally, he made the industry sit up and take notice of his talent in 1982. The film ‘Disco Dancer’ established him as Bollywood’s Disco King. ‘Pyaar Jhukta Nahin’ became another blockbuster in 1985.

Mithun went from strength to strength and the phenomenal success of ‘Ghulami’ and ‘Pyaari Behna’ in the same year cemented his position as Amitabh Bachchan’s successor.

Mithun appeared alongside Amitabh in ‘Ganga Jamuna Saraswati’ and ‘Agneepath.’ Despite Amitabh’s presence, Mithun held his own as Krishnan Iyer MA in ‘Agneepath.’ He received widespread acclaim from fans for his outstanding performance, says the acting institute in Kolkata.

On the other hand, despite his memorable performances, films such as ‘Mujrim,’ ‘Prem Pratigya’ and ‘Jallad’ bombed at the box office. Many people believe that filmmakers never fully explored Mithun’s talent. In fact, Mithun acted in mostly mediocre and B-grade films in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Mithun won another National Award in 1992 for the Bengali film ‘Tahader Katha,’ directed by Buddhadev Dasgupta. He gave an outstanding performance as a freedom fighter in the film.

Mithun’s never-say-die attitude has always helped him overcome the obstacles that came his way. Mithun Chakrabarti is celebrated for his contributions to the Bengali and Hindi film industry. He has been and will continue to be an inspiration for many people who aspire to be actors, says the acting institute in Kolkata.
